Lent Begins

Lent Begins

Last night we started the Lenten Season with Ash Wednesday. This was one of the first times I ever gave out ashes. It really is amazing to make the sign of the cross and say “Turn away from Sin and be faithful to the Gospel”. It never became repetitive and each time it was personal. I sometimes forget the magnitude of our faith. After everyone received their Ashes and I sat back down I looked at everyone and seeing that mark of faith was powerful. It is a simple sign but speak of where we came from and where we will return.

I think this will be a very blessed Lent. It will have its challenges as always but in the end it is all worth it. I want to keep this short tonight as it is the start of Lent. I hope and pray you are settled on what you feel called to do this Lent. I know I am.

Until tomorrow, God Bless, and have a Blessed Lent.

Thursday after Ash Wednesday
Lectionary: 220
Reading 1
DT 30:15-20
Moses said to the people:
“Today I have set before you
life and prosperity, death and doom.
If you obey the commandments of the LORD, your God,
which I enjoin on you today,
loving him, and walking in his ways,
and keeping his commandments, statutes and decrees,
you will live and grow numerous,
and the LORD, your God,
will bless you in the land you are entering to occupy.
If, however, you turn away your hearts and will not listen,
but are led astray and adore and serve other gods,
I tell you now that you will certainly perish;
you will not have a long life
on the land that you are crossing the Jordan to enter and occupy.
I call heaven and earth today to witness against you:
I have set before you life and death,
the blessing and the curse.
Choose life, then,
that you and your descendants may live, by loving the LORD, your God,
heeding his voice, and holding fast to him.
For that will mean life for you,
a long life for you to live on the land that the LORD swore
he would give to your fathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.”
Responsorial Psalm
PS 1:1-2, 3, 4 AND 6
R. (40:5a) Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.
Blessed the man who follows not
the counsel of the wicked
Nor walks in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the company of the insolent,
But delights in the law of the LORD
and meditates on his law day and night.
R. Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.
He is like a tree
planted near running water,
That yields its fruit in due season,
and whose leaves never fade.
Whatever he does, prospers.
R. Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.
Not so the wicked, not so;
they are like chaff which the wind drives away.
For the LORD watches over the way of the just,
but the way of the wicked vanishes.
R. Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.
Verse Before The Gospel
MT 4:17
Repent, says the Lord;
the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Gospel
LK 9:22-25
Jesus said to his disciples:
“The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected
by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes,
and be killed and on the third day be raised.”

Then he said to all,
“If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself
and take up his cross daily and follow me.
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it,
but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.
What profit is there for one to gain the whole world
yet lose or forfeit himself?”

Last Min Idea

Last Min Idea

Tonight for the blog I decided that instead of saying what I am doing for Lent or some ideas for you, that I ask this :

Pray for what God wants you to do

Search your heart and see where you need to go

Pray before & after receiving ashes

Check area churches and see what they are offering

Talk to friends and ask them

The reason for this is that I feel we have to do what is right for us and not what may be right for someone else. It is our own personal journey in Lent and we need to make it personal. I am not saying don’t take from what others are doing but make sure it is something for you.

Until tomorrow, God Bless, and prepare the way.

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 77

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary TimeLectionary: 77

Reading 1
LV 13:1-2, 44-46
The Lord said to Moses and Aaron,
“If someone has on his skin a scab or pustule or blotch
which appears to be the sore of leprosy,
he shall be brought to Aaron, the priest,
or to one of the priests among his descendants.
If the man is leprous and unclean,
the priest shall declare him unclean
by reason of the sore on his head.

“The one who bears the sore of leprosy
shall keep his garments rent and his head bare,
and shall muffle his beard;
he shall cry out, ‘Unclean, unclean!’
As long as the sore is on him he shall declare himself unclean,
since he is in fact unclean.
He shall dwell apart, making his abode outside the camp.”
Responsorial Psalm
PS 32:1-2, 5, 11
R. (7) I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation.
Blessed is he whose fault is taken away,
whose sin is covered.
Blessed the man to whom the LORD imputes not guilt,
in whose spirit there is no guile.
R. I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation.
Then I acknowledged my sin to you,
my guilt I covered not.
I said, “I confess my faults to the LORD,”
and you took away the guilt of my sin.
R. I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation.
Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, you just;
exult, all you upright of heart.
R. I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation.
Reading 2
1 COR 10:31—11:1
Brothers and sisters,
Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do,
do everything for the glory of God.
Avoid giving offense, whether to the Jews or Greeks or
the church of God,
just as I try to please everyone in every way,
not seeking my own benefit but that of the many,
that they may be saved.
Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.
Alleluia
LK 7:16
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
A great prophet has arisen in our midst,
God has visited his people.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel
MK 1:40-45
A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said,
“If you wish, you can make me clean.”
Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand,
touched him, and said to him,
“I do will it. Be made clean.”
The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean.
Then, warning the him sternly, he dismissed him at once.

He said to him, “See that you tell no one anything,
but go, show yourself to the priest
and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed;
that will be proof for them.”

The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter.
He spread the report abroad
so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly.
He remained outside in deserted places,

and people kept coming to him from everywhere.

"Time after Time" with a Twist.

"Time after Time" with a Twist

Have you ever heard a song that you have heard hundreds of times, you know it by heart, sing along each time it’s on, and yet all of a sudden it hits you in a different way? I bet we all can say yes to that question. Tonight there was a song on a show that I loved from my teen years, the great 80’s music genre, “Time After Time”. Now I know it is about a love that is changing and life taking a turn. In past that song represented some girlfriends and relationships that were ending. Yet tonight it hit me different. I saw a relationship with Jesus in that song. Maybe it is because where my life is heading and that other aspect of life really has gone by.  I went back and listened to the song a few times and looked up the lyrics and i really do see a relationship with Jesus in it.

Hear me out before you think I am nuts. I know I have asked this before in other blogs as well. From how I am hearing it tonight it is a person speaking to Jesus and His reply is in the Chorus of the song. The best way I think to do this is to brake the song apart and explain. The first part of the conversation starts:

Lying in my bed I hear the clock tick,
And think of you
Caught up in circles confusion -
Is nothing new
Flashback - warm nights -
Almost left behind
Suitcases of memories,
Time after -

I know I have had nights laying in bed and kept staring at the clock because I was confused about something. Unsure about where my life is going and having flashbacks of where my life was and memories of both good and bad. Thought how I feel that somehow I missed an opportunity and now feel left behind from a life I was to have. As these thoughts and memories go through my head, I think about God, Jesus and how this all is to be.

    The conversation continues:

Sometimes you picture me -
I'm walking too far ahead
You're calling to me, I can't hear
What you've said -
Then you say - go slow -
I fall behind -
The second hand unwinds

For me this is still part of my conversation with Jesus. I am saying I know you see me trying to get somewhere before I am to be there because either I am not ready yet and I have things I should do first  or things are not in place yet. Jesus speaks to us but we do not always hear what He is saying. It can be that I just do not want to listen or things around me are blocking His voice. How many times do we get the idea that we have to slow down and not be caught up with the trappings of the world and be on that fast track for money, love etc... Then we finally slow down but yet we still do not get the full message and then we ask for the perfect sign to move on again and we wait and wait and miss it because it was not what we expected or wanted. Then we are not where we need to be and fall behind. Time passes and we are back in that bed staring at the clock filled with confusion.

Next is the chorus and Jesus or Gods response back:

If you're lost you can look - and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall I will catch you - I'll be waiting
Time after time

Jesus is saying that no matter where you are or how lost you feel, just look and you will find Me time and time again. There will not be a time where you look that you will not find Him. He will catch you each time you fall and He will be waiting for you each time. He is not going anywhere. It is hard to think that no matter what He is there because it is so beyond our understanding. His love and forgiveness is eternal and unyielding.

Next is our side of the conversation:

After my picture fades and darkness has
Turned to gray
Watching through windows - you're wondering
If I'm OK
Secrets stolen from deep inside
The drum beats out of time -

When we are lost and in that darkness, we tend to focus more inward and not look outside of our own self to ask for help or call out or pray to Jesus. Not saying we don’t but it may take a bit to do that. It is when some light comes in and its not dark but some light and it is more of a gray or fog around us. Looking through our souls or windows Jesus knows how we are doing but wants us to feel better. I wonder sometimes does He ever wonder if we are really ok. If we are far from Him and sin or secrets are blocking Him from us. Yes, I know He knows but when it is that human side He had when He was on earth that makes me wonder. Jesus knows what we have done even if no one else in the world does. There are no secrets we can keep from Him. Have you ever watched someone from a window, where they do not know you are watching them? They think they are all alone and acts as so. They may be sad, happy, angry etc but you can tell because they think they are alone. The idea of watching from a window puts us at a distance. Not part of the action but removed from it. When we do not ask, speak to or pray to Jesus, that is what we are doing. We are putting Him at that distance and removing Him from our life. We are saying you may watch me but there is a separation between us. So when He is calling out we can not hear Him because of that “glass” between us.

The chorus again is His reply to us. It is same as above. There is nothing He will not do or will not be there for us time and time again.

    We say again :

You said go slow -
I fall behind
The second hand unwinds -

How often have I said to Jesus “ But You said..... or I felt You said if I.... or This is what  I was....”.. too many to count I bet. How about you? I fall into a cycle where what I thought or what I wanted to hear I listened to and found it to be wrong and I fall behind again. Time passes and I feel lost and confused or stuck in darkness and blame Him for it because “He said”... We have to really listen and act and not wait for those grand huge signs of what we are to do. I have found that often it is a whisper that Jesus speaks to me in. Mainly I think because He knows I need to silent my world to get it and it is a way for me to work on and through it.

The response again is  the chorus but at the end of the song this repeats:

Time after time
Time after time
Time after time
Time after time

Time after Time Jesus will be there for us. No question about it. We just have to look to find Him. Now below I put the link to the video and after that the readings. I ask that you listen to it with your eyes closed now and see what you get from the song. You also can click here to see it

Until tomorrow, God Bless, and know Time after Time Jesus is there.

Memorial of Saints Cyril, Monk, and Methodius, Bishop
Lectionary: 334
Reading 1
GN 3:9-24
The LORD God called to Adam and asked him, “Where are you?”
He answered, “I heard you in the garden;
but I was afraid, because I was naked,
so I hid myself.”
Then he asked, “Who told you that you were naked?
You have eaten, then,
from the tree of which I had forbidden you to eat!”
The man replied, “The woman whom you put here with me—
she gave me fruit from the tree, and so I ate it.”
The LORD God then asked the woman,
“Why did you do such a thing?”
The woman answered, “The serpent tricked me into it, so I ate it.”

Then the LORD God said to the serpent:

“Because you have done this, you shall be banned
from all the animals
and from all the wild creatures;
On your belly shall you crawl,
and dirt shall you eat
all the days of your life.
I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and hers;
He will strike at your head,
while you strike at his heel.”

To the woman he said:

“I will intensify the pangs of your childbearing;
in pain shall you bring forth children.
Yet your urge shall be for your husband,
and he shall be your master.”

To the man he said: “Because you listened to your wife
and ate from the tree of which I had forbidden you to eat,

“Cursed be the ground because of you!
In toil shall you eat its yield
all the days of your life.
Thorns and thistles shall it bring forth to you,
as you eat of the plants of the field.
By the sweat of your face
shall you get bread to eat,
Until you return to the ground,
from which you were taken;
For you are dirt,
and to dirt you shall return.”

The man called his wife Eve,
because she became the mother of all the living.

For the man and his wife the LORD God made leather garments,
with which he clothed them.
Then the LORD God said: “See! The man has become like one of us,
knowing what is good and what is evil!
Therefore, he must not be allowed to put out his hand
to take fruit from the tree of life also,
and thus eat of it and live forever.”
The LORD God therefore banished him from the garden of Eden,
to till the ground from which he had been taken.
When he expelled the man,
he settled him east of the garden of Eden;
and he stationed the cherubim and the fiery revolving sword,
to guard the way to the tree of life.
Responsorial Psalm
PS 90:2, 3-4ABC, 5-6, 12-13
R. (1) In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge.
Before the mountains were begotten
and the earth and the world were brought forth,
from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
R. In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge.
You turn man back to dust,
saying, “Return, O children of men.”
For a thousand years in your sight
are as yesterday, now that it is past,
or as a watch of the night.
R. In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge.
You make an end of them in their sleep;
the next morning they are like the changing grass,
Which at dawn springs up anew,
but by evening wilts and fades.
R. In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge.
Teach us to number our days aright,
that we may gain wisdom of heart.
Return, O LORD! How long?
Have pity on your servants!
R. In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge.
Alleluia
MT 4:4B
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
One does not live on bread alone,
but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel
MK 8:1-10
In those days when there again was a great crowd without anything to eat,
Jesus summoned the disciples and said,
“My heart is moved with pity for the crowd,
because they have been with me now for three days
and have nothing to eat.
If I send them away hungry to their homes,
they will collapse on the way,
and some of them have come a great distance.”
His disciples answered him, “Where can anyone get enough bread
to satisfy them here in this deserted place?”
Still he asked them, “How many loaves do you have?”
They replied, “Seven.”
He ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground.
Then, taking the seven loaves he gave thanks, broke them,
and gave them to his disciples to distribute,
and they distributed them to the crowd.
They also had a few fish.
He said the blessing over them
and ordered them distributed also.
They ate and were satisfied.
They picked up the fragments left over–seven baskets.
There were about four thousand people.

He dismissed the crowd and got into the boat with his disciples
and came to the region of Dalmanutha.

Final Countdown

Final Countdown

It is the “Final Countdown”. Lent is a week away. Are you ready? I know I am just about ready. Looking forward to the start of Lent as usual. For the past few days I have been under the weather with cold/flu and it got me thinking about symptoms. As we are all aware of the symptoms of cold / flu are very similar and it is hard to tell which you have. Also the symptoms creep up and we start to realize we are getting sick and sometimes are able to lessen the degree of our illness with medicine or vitamins. With those being said, lets look at being spiritually sick. How do we know when we are and also how do we know the difference between those things that bring us closer to God or pull us away, even though it seems good for us?

This is a great time to examine yourself and get that spiritual exam before heading into Lent. You will be able to see what needs your attention and what you need to do to heal by the end of lent. We need to be spiritually ready for Easter. For myself I will be taking this last week to look deep, check out the hidden corners, expose areas to the light, so I can be honest with myself. It is not easy to see where you really are vs where you think you are. I admit that leading up to lent I have lost some gains I held. Some past sins that I thought I have overcome have come back. This is one of the examples I said about symptoms like an illness. Sins are symptoms of the health of our spiritual life.  When past sins start to pop up we have to act on them quickly to diminish their impact on our lives. If we ignore them then it flares up and like an illness gets worse. Again I admit that I ignored the signs and has made it more challenging. Well, I can not really say ignored it but more down played them. How often do you do that? Down play some sins. It is easy in the world today. So often the sins of our faith are just a personal choice in the world. “ It is ok”. “ Do what makes you happy”. This is the down playing of sin in the world. Are we of the world? I hope not.

What are the symptoms of sin in your life? For me... hmmmm.. Well, I do not pray as much or my prayers seem more rushed or quick. I do not read the bible as much or other spiritual readings. I let other things get in the way of doing the blog or posting religious things on social media. These are just some small ways I can tell things are off a bit. If I ignore the signs/ symptoms then it gets worse. It is like if you do not get your meds, fluids, food etc from the store when you start to feel it coming then you are too sick or tired to go get them and it stays longer. It is harder for you to help yourself the sicker you get. Think as you sin it gets easier and easier as it goes. You feel more and more distant from God. A way to act quick is go to confession. That is that quick booster shot for our Spiritual Health. When I leave confession it is a great feeling. Life is more clear. Then you can add what you do in your life like saying the rosary, reading the bible etc... You have to come up with your own Spiritual Healing Plan that reflects you. For me, I have tried others plans and it never worked but once I took pieces of their plans that represented me, they worked.

We have a week left and with that take the time each day and take that spiritual checkup test. See where you are, where you want to be and whats the reality of it. I will see about making up a spiritual check list by the weekend for myself and share it with you as well. Let’s make this Lent one for the record book.

Until tomorrow, God Bless, and check on your spiritual health today.

Thursday of the Fifth Week in Ordinary Time
Lectionary: 332
Reading 1
GN 2:18-25
The LORD God said:
“It is not good for the man to be alone.
I will make a suitable partner for him.”
So the LORD God formed out of the ground
various wild animals and various birds of the air,
and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them;
whatever the man called each of them would be its name.
The man gave names to all the cattle,
all the birds of the air, and all the wild animals;
but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man.

So the LORD God cast a deep sleep on the man,
and while he was asleep, he took out one of his ribs
and closed up its place with flesh.
The LORD God then built up into a woman
the rib that he had taken from the man.
When he brought her to the man, the man said:

“This one, at last, is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
this one shall be called ‘woman,’
for out of ‘her man’ this one has been taken.”

That is why a man leaves his father and mother
and clings to his wife,
and the two of them become one flesh.

The man and his wife were both naked, yet they felt no shame.
Responsorial Psalm
PS 128:1-2, 3, 4-5
R. (see 1a) Blessed are those who fear the Lord.
Blessed are you who fear the LORD,
who walk in his ways!
For you shall eat the fruit of your handiwork;
blessed shall you be, and favored.
R. Blessed are those who fear the Lord.
Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine
in the recesses of your home;
Your children like olive plants
around your table.
R. Blessed are those who fear the Lord.
Behold, thus is the man blessed
who fears the LORD.
The LORD bless you from Zion:
may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem
all the days of your life.
R. Blessed are those who fear the Lord.
Alleluia
JAS 1:21BC
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you
and is able to save your souls.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel
MK 7:24-30
Jesus went to the district of Tyre.
He entered a house and wanted no one to know about it,
but he could not escape notice.
Soon a woman whose daughter had an unclean spirit heard about him.
She came and fell at his feet.
The woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by birth,
and she begged him to drive the demon out of her daughter.
He said to her, “Let the children be fed first.
For it is not right to take the food of the children
and throw it to the dogs.”
She replied and said to him,
“Lord, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s scraps.”
Then he said to her, “For saying this, you may go.
The demon has gone out of your daughter.”
When the woman went home, she found the child lying in bed
and the demon gone.
