Say What You Need to Say

"Say What You Need to Say"

Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ Anything more is from the evil one. ~ Matthew 5:37

I have heard John Mayer’s song “ Say ” at least 75 times, but tonight it was like I heard it for the first time in a different way. I guess I never really listened to the words as much as tonight. As I type this blog I am starting to think its not that the words of the song that I really listened to tonight but that I am in a different place the I was and the song had a different meaning to me. As they say you may read a passage of the bible everyday and it may have a different meaning to you each time.

The main felling that I got out of the song was “ Say What You Need to Say” or “Pray What You Need to Pray”. Do not hold what is inside, let it out and make it your prayer. Yes, Jesus knows what is in our heart but I think we still need to say it. Whether it be out loud or in our head. We have to acknowledge what is inside of ourselves so we may come to know the truth that is within us. I know for me that at times I need to “say” it out loud so I am hearing it as well and makes me understand its truth within me. I can not ignore what I am hearing from myself out loud as easily as I can push that “ LA LA LA” in my head to ignore what either my mind is thinking or my heart feeling.

The beginning of the song, speaks about putting all your problems and frustrations and put them in quotations. This means speak of them, get them out and let Jesus know first hand from your heart what is going on and has gone on. Then it speaks of how in our mind we are fighting with the past and maybe part of the past is the sins and as Catholics we do “Say What You Need to Say” in the confessional so that those shadows  (sins) are left behind. That at times we may be feeling that we are alone and its us battling the world to stay on that path and stay away from sin. We are better off when we are able to confess or say what has weighed us down and kept us away from what we want from this life of Jesus.

I kept playing over two verses of the song. The verses were the last two from the song.

Have no fear for givin' in
Have no fear for givin' over
You better know that in the end
It's better to say too much
Than to never to say what you need to say again

Even if your hands are shakin'
And your faith is broken
Even as the eyes are closin'
Do it with a heart wide open
A wide heart

We should not fear that we are giving in or what we are giving over. Jesus wants us to give our worries and burdens to Him. He wants us to give over so we may be strong. It is not being weak when we do this, but being strong to be able to say “I need Your help. I need You, Jesus”.  It is better to say all of what our needs, desires, prayers, pain, and concerns are because if we do not then the graces of Jesus may be limited. We are not guaranteed another day and if we wait to turn our hearts to Jesus then we may just lose that chance because “we didn’t say what we needed to say”. It is ok if we are nervous and our faith may be broken. Jesus is there in our brokenness. All we need to do is open our hearts to Him and “Pray What You Need to Pray” and “Say What You Need to Say” because He is listening and waiting for you.

I can not believe how I never got this message from the song before but I know I will never think of the song the same way again. Below I have posted the song and the lyrics for you to listen to and read. We need to say what is in our hearts and open them so that Jesus may heal our broken heart.

Until tomorrow, God Bless, and remember to say what is on your mind and what is in your heart.

"Say"

Take all of your wasted honor
Every little past frustration
Take all of your so-called problems,
Better put 'em in quotations

Say what you need to say [x8]

Walking like a one man army
Fighting with the shadows in your head
Living out the same old moment
Knowing you'd be better off instead,
If you could only . . .

Say what you need to say [x8]

Have no fear for giving in
Have no fear for giving over
You'd better know that in the end
Its better to say too much
Then never say what you need to say again

Even if your hands are shaking
And your faith is broken
Even as the eyes are closing
Do it with a heart wide open

Say what you need to say [x20]
